How to Compare Exterior Project Estimates
Two estimates can have different totals because they describe different work. Before comparing price, compare what each proposal includes.
Start with materials and preparation
Ask for product names or specifications, quantities where appropriate, and an explanation of preparation. Confirm whether removal, disposal, and substrate repairs are included or priced separately.
Look closely at transitions
For siding, discuss openings and trim. For roofing, discuss flashing and penetrations. For windows, clarify interior and exterior finishing. For gutters, confirm downspout locations and discharge plans.
Ask how changes are handled
Hidden conditions may not be visible before work begins. Agree on how additional work would be documented, approved, and priced. Keep the written proposal and any changes together.
Confirm practical details
Review access, scheduling assumptions, cleanup, payment terms, and the actual written coverage being offered. An organized comparison helps you ask better questions before choosing the next step.
